Estimated meter reads and catch-up bills

An estimated read is a guess. When the guess is too low, the difference comes back as a larger bill.

What an estimated read is

When the distributor cannot read your meter (locked access, a blocked meter, a missed visit) the retailer bills an estimate based on past use. The bill says so, usually near the meter details. Actual reads are labelled actual.

Why it causes catch-up bills

When an actual read is finally taken, the retailer works out what you really used, subtracts what was billed, and charges the difference. If estimates ran low for months, the result is one large catch-up bill. The reverse can also happen, which gives you a credit.

What to do

  1. Spot the estimate. Check the read type on every bill.
  2. Send your own read. Most retailers accept a customer read, often through their website or app, ideally before the due date. Take a photo of the meter dial or display with the date visible.
  3. Fix access. If estimates keep happening, ask the distributor why. Access problems at the meter are often easy to solve.
  4. Check the next bill. The start read should equal the previous end read, and the usage should look plausible against your cycles.
  5. Ask about limits. Rules on how far back a retailer can recover undercharges depend on your state and customer type. Ask your retailer or ombudsman rather than assuming.

Plan for the correction

If you see two or more estimates in a row, assume a correction is coming and put money aside. Comparing usage with your actual dryer cycles shows roughly how large the gap could be. See cost per cycle.

Where LaundroMetrics helps

It flags estimated reads and any gap between two bills so you can send an actual read before the catch-up arrives. See the gas bill checker. General information only, not legal advice.
